Non Surfing Activities

A renowned destination for eco-tourism, Costa Rica is an amazing country full of adventures and experiences that take advantage of the country’s abundant wildlife and stunning natural beauty. During your stay at Peaks ‘n Swells, you’ll have one full day off midweek to explore. Our family has been here in Montezuma for 25 years and will help you find the perfect family hike, arrange a horse back ride, point out the best biking trails, or arrange an extra massage.

Hike to Montezuma Waterfall

The Montezuma Waterfall cascades down 24 meters into a fresh water swimming pool. The hike to the waterfall is about 20 minutes from town and walkable distance from camp– a great hike for families. If you’re feeling adventurous, you can continue up a steep and challenging trail that leads to the top of the waterfall, where you’re rewarded with a rope swing into a fresh water pool.

Horseback Riding

Exploring the coastline and jungle horseback is an unforgettable experience and a favorite of many of our guests. We’ll hook you up with the local guide in town.

Cabo Blanco Nature Preserve

Cabo Blanco is a spectacularly beautiful nature preserve that is home to 150 different species of birds, as well as white-tailed deer, armadillos, anteaters, howler and capuchin monkeys, ocelots, jagaurundis, and sloths. The Reserve encompasses 1,270 hectares of forest and 1,788 hectares of protected ocean, hosting many fish, lobster, giant conches, and oyster. Stop by the Cabuya bakery on your way back to camp for fresh smoothies and the best baked goods on the peninsula.

Visit the Turtle Sanctuary

There is a turtle sanctuary right on the beach in front of camp. The volunteers are more than happy to show you the nesting ground and encourage visitors to participate in the release when the babies are born. It’s truly amazing to watch these little tiny turtles make their way into the ocean just a few hours after they’re born.

SUP

Stand up paddle boarding is another great way to get out in the waves. We can help you plan a SUP session with beautiful views of the coastline that you can’t get any other way.

Ziplining

Thrill seekers can take a tour of the jungle canopy from 150 feet with a zip-line tour. The canopy tour consists of a series of 9 cables and 13 platforms, and runs over the Montezuma Waterfall.

Boat Tour to Tortuga Island

Local operators in Montezuma run a tour boat out to Tortuga Island, where a volcanic rock reef makes for excellent snorkeling. Eagle rays, angelfish, morays, and porcupine fish are common sights. Lunch is served on Tortuga Island before the boat heads back to Montezuma.

Relax!

Of course, you don’t have to go anywhere on your day off! You’re welcome to stay right here at camp and enjoy the pool, maybe schedule an extra massage to ease those sore muscles or walk into town for a gelato.
